Spreading across the frontiers of Afghanistan and Pakistan, India and China, the Hindu Kush – Himalayan plateau constitutes one of the most politically sensitive and geo-strategically crucial regions in the world. Rich in energy, water, and mineral resources, it is also emerging as a key infrastructure corridor linking the Middle East to China and Central Asia to the Indian Ocean rim.  The past decade has witnessed both growing national ambitions and expanding cross-border investment in energy and infrastructure projects throughout this critical zone.  Sustainable development of the Himalayan region’s natural resources could offer important economic benefits as well as significant opportunities for enhanced regional cooperation in this troubled area of the world.  Yet current resource extraction and infrastructure plans and projects raise an array of political, security, and economic questions as well as a host of environmental concerns. Please join us on Wednesday, 20 July 2011 as we host a distinguished panel of experts to discuss “Resources on the Roof of the World: International Politics and Sustainable Development in the Greater Himalayan Region.”
