New Year message by Hunza’s Prisoners of Conscience-Asiran e Hunza:

31st December 2011, Central Jail Gilgit: As the 2011 sun set on Hunza and Gilgit-Baltistan, we thank all the youth, political activists and leaders and the people for sending us New Year messages in Gilgit district Jail and on the internet.

Since August 11, 2011, when police and the puppet government killed two innocent IDPs of Attaabad Landslide lake; a son and a father, who were protesting peacefully for their legitimate rights in Aliabad Hunza, the police and security agencies entered houses without any legal warrants and authority in the darkness of the nights, besieged elders, women and children and tortured young people for alleged involvement in the mob reaction and for supporting the rights of the IDPs and the people.

We were arrested, tortured and jailed for voicing against police brutality and siding with the rights of the IDPs and the people and for demanding justice and taking action against the killers. The killers are still not charged, nor arrested and they reportedly roam around.

We are now in the block 2 of the central jail in Gilgit, booked by the “government of the killers of the rights of the people” under Anti-Terrorist Act (ATA). We are denied B-class and kept like terrorists and criminals and denied all facilities like hygienic food, heating system and TV facility; whereas other prisoners charged with sectarian killings and terrorism enjoy all those facilities.

But our nerves are strong. We are not broken. We will continue our political struggle for the rights of the common people and for justice. Even we are prepared to perish to protect your rights and the rights of our children on our own land.

On the eve of the New Year, our message to the youth, the political and social activists and the people at large is to rise up and make your voice heard, continue to fight against all injustices and corrupt practices of the government. Always be on the side of the people against any tyranny and oppression.

Long live the people, long live our struggle.
